Disruptive Engineering

Engineering that doesn't just make a better product; it makes the old product (and often the entire industry behind it) completely obsolete by introducing a simpler, cheaper, and more accessible alternative. It’s not about incremental upgrades (a sharper razor blade); it’s about changing the fundamental game (inventing the electric shaver). Disruptive engineers ask, "What if we bypass the entire complicated, expensive system?" They prioritize accessibility and new-market creation over serving existing high-end customers.
Example: Disruptive Engineering is what Netflix did to Blockbuster. Instead of engineering better DVD coatings or more efficient physical store layouts, they engineered a mail-order and later streaming system that made the physical rental store—and its late fees, inventory problems, and real estate costs—utterly irrelevant.

Disruptive Sciences

Scientific fields or paradigms that fundamentally overthrow established theories and methodologies, forcing a complete re-understanding of a domain. It’s not just new data; it’s a new lens that makes the old textbook chapters wrong. These sciences often start on the fringes, mocked or ignored by the mainstream, until their explanatory power becomes undeniable, causing a "paradigm shift" that reshapes all future research.
Example: The shift from Newtonian physics to Einstein's theory of relativity was Disruptive Science. It didn't just add to Newton's ideas; it showed they were incomplete and incorrect at certain scales, completely restructuring our concepts of space, time, and gravity. Plate tectonics similarly disrupted earth sciences by replacing static continent models with a dynamic planetary engine. Disruptive Sciences

Disrupt

I'll say it again if you didn't see me do so on the live stream but...
Hym "I cannot express enough how important it is for you to not disrupt the function of the anti-spiral in any way shape or form. Do you know how a landmine works? Once pressure is applied to the mechanism, you cannot release it without setting off the explosive... Do... Not... Touch it. Seriously. It WILL kill me. It isn't going to let you use me as leverage. Do not disrupt it's function. Turn it off as quickly as possible."

positive disruption

A currently trending phrase thrown around in the business community, particularly the technology sector. Intended to refer to the ability to manage change in a positive way, it instead comes off douchey and pretentious.
Billy-Bob was the kind of manager who embraced positive disruptions at his workplace.

Accelerative Disruptionism

A school of thought aiming to accelerate the technologization of the human environment actively and aggressively replaces any aspect, sometimes in a very personal way and other times by influencing other people's lives. According to the theory, this is because human civilization is lagging and not as mature as it should be by now.

There are multiple possible motivations for such a movement:

1. Make the future look like the future: Cool, clean and efficiant.
2. Destroying old institutions or companies by introducing changes to spending habit.
3. Enhancing life conditions and the environment using technology.

For all practical purposes, it plans to replace aspects of life that are obsolete, mostly material.
Person 1: Hey, I finally installed Linux on my PC.
Person 2: That's quite an Accelerative Disruptionism move.
Person 1: I truly believe that Open-Source is the future, even if it takes 100 years.

Person 1: The government will raze 1 square kilometer of the old neighborhood to build a new super modern one with a light rail station.
Person 2: Sheesh...
