Behind the Screen

A pernicious social and psychological phenomena and by-product of virtuality. 'Behind the Screen' describes an individuals preference for the world behind their TV or PC screen and their subsequent desire to live in it. A kind of cultural autism. Produces Clueless TV Wanabees and Couch Potatoes.
The massive growth of numbers on the waiting lists for participation in Reality TV, Jerry Springer, Fame Academy etc and the rise in the numbers of Personal Web-Cams.

Name that thing on the screen before it disappears

A language game played by Brown University students in which an intricately timed powerpoint presentation displays images of clothes, food, etc. while students attempt to name the articles in a foreign language before they pass from one side of the display to the other.
Diego: And what is this.
Joe: der Handschuhe!!!
Diego: ...die Handschuhe?
Joe: Oh...yeah. I love "Name that thing on the screen before it disappears"!

blue screen of death

In the bad old days before XP, this was a frequent occurence on computers which ran on a Windows OS. In some of the worst cases, you only had to look at the computer in a funny manner for the temperamental bastard to give you the Blue Screen Of Death! It usually tells you some shit like "a fatal error has occured" and gives you some mathematical gibberish. Basically, it means the operating system is rather shite and can't be arsed doing what you wanted it to do...
I remember a few years ago on my section at work we had this computer that gave us the Blue Screen Of Death so fuckin' often on a daily basis that I ended up decorating the monitor with the chequered tape we normally use on files if someone is terminally ill!

White Screen of Death

The White Screen of Death is any screen with a white background that appears on an iPod when it is broken beyond repair. These screens are usually accompanied by a face with red X's for eyes and a frowny face and says something like "Please go to apple.com/support for assistance".

A white screen of death is almost guarenteed after dropping an iPod (along with a cracked screen), dropping the iPod in water, someone steps on the iPod or the stars align in such a way that your iPod just suddenly doesn't work for no apparent reason. This is linked to the Blue Screen of Death in old Windows computers and also the Red Ring of Death in XBox 360's.
The White Screen of Death is why I now have a Creative.

the screen savers

The Screen Savers was an hour-and-30-minute long program on TechTV.
The hosts were Patrick Norton and Leo Laporte. They were joined by Martin Sargent, who did Site of the Night, Morgan Webb, and who did the Mac and Windows tips. Megan Morrone, Kevin Rose, Dan Huard handled calls and the website and stuff. Yoshi(real name Josh), modded everything he could get his hands on. There was also some red-headded chick but I can't remember her name.

The show's last 30 minutes were chopped away. The set was changed 3 times, and relocated to Los Angeles, then changed two more times. Morgan went on to co-host X-Play(formerly Extended Play), Megan had a child, Martin went off to host his own show, and Leo took over as host Call for Help.

This left Patrick and Kevin as hosts. When TechTV was bought, everything was moved to Los Angeles. Patrick and Yoshi decided to stay back in San Diego. Segment Producer Sarah Lane joined Kevin as host. After the set change, Alex Albrecht and Kevin Rose hosted and Sarah just did stuff off to the side. Alex leaves to do other entertainment stuff and is replaced with Kevin Pereira.

The show is renamed to Attack of the Show and the set is changed again. Kevin Rose leaves to host a download-only show. The only original Screen Saver left on G4TechTV is Morgan Webb.

At the time this was typed. Attack of the Show has had two guests co-hosts. There will be five more co-hosts until one is finally chosen.
