A label that most people puts on another who wears dark,(preferably black), clothes. Unfortunately, it is a label on someone's exterior and not how they are like.
I am not exactly sure how that label came to be, but I suppose every kind of style needs labeling so society can judge everyone by their clothing.
I am not exactly sure how that label came to be, but I suppose every kind of style needs labeling so society can judge everyone by their clothing.
I have to say a few words about this. My whole family started to question me because of what I was wearing. . And my uncle thought I was goth. So, my sadistic uncle got a laptop computer out and looked up the definition of:
Emo - A topic that we were talking about when someone thought I was that.
Preppy Goth - My mom wants me to be a prep, but she would really rather settle for this. Umm. . No.
Goth - Main topic of conversation.
I thought I would include that because that is most of the reason why I am defining this, and an example of how lame it is,(I find it a priviledge to have the courage to be different, but it is very difficult when closed minded people such as my family shut you out, give you a hard time, label you, or try to change you), to not wear something from Abercrombie and Fitch or a store that doesn't have the *in* stuff. People tend to over react about them. .

goth: Sans history lesson, goths fall into two categories:
1. People, usually quiet misfits, who are often quite intelligent and creative. They tend to focus on the darker side of life, particularly human nature.
2. more common High school/college students who, by dressing in black and listening to heavy metal, attempt to make sure everyone around them is aware of how cool and individualistic they are. That their individualism centers on dressing, thinking, and acting like everyone else in the clique doesn't seem to bother them. Can often be found writing bad psuedo-suicidal poetry in wirebound notebooks. They usually drop the facade as soon as they realize that no one around them, including their parents, is shocked any more.
1. "Hey, see the goth over there? Go ask to see her artwork. It's really cool."
2. "Ohmigod, did you, like, read the new Anne Rice book? I am, like, so glad I'm a goth!"

There are two kinds of goth:
1) Usually a very creative and philosophical person. They are fairly intelligent, listen to many kinds of music although it is rarely packaged, plastic pop. If they do then it is because they want to rather than due to a need to fit in. These people are themselves, they are real. Not all of them are Satanists, they are not suicidal, murderous, or even scary as long as you don't fear what is different. They can be fun and happy and aren't ashamed to laugh at themselves. Goths do not appreciate being labeled. They usually wear a good amount of black, but have their own unique styles and wear color sometimes. They often have a dark disposition. Some people call me a goth, but I just consider myself different :)
2) Someone who just wants to rebel, or thinks that being goth is cool. They listen to bands like Slipknot and Korn, thinking that they are "soooo hardcore n' goffik". No offence to Marilyn Manson, but many of these posers will listen to him too. They are over emotional and whiny and just miss the entire idea of what a goth really is.

Real Goth: Hey man, how is it going?
Fake Goth: The world is crying and I want to kill myself and skin my family!! And I'm just so goth! So gothic I could just hang myself!!!
RG: *Looks around uncomfortably* well... don't do that... there is too much to live for... hey, maybe you should see a school counselor or something.
FG: No! They don't understand me, no one does! Only Fred Durst! Only he! *Charges away to bathroom*
RG: Poor guy. Wait, Fred Durst? What the?! Sigh. *goes back to reading poetry and hanging out with friends*
Note: I had no intentions of making fun of suicidal people, having been in that state myself a few years ago. I merely wanted to mock the fake goths who act suicidal for attention.

Along with some history thingy about Vikings or another. Goth is a shallow label stuck onto some consumerist subculture originally cultivated as an architectural design, but has grossly mutated into a fashion statement for slightly alienated teens (and occasionally adults).
I have read a lot of these definitions, and most of them define the "true" goth and the "wannabe" goth. Let me just say this:
There is no difference.
It doesn't matter if someone spends $500 a week on mass-manufactured Hot Topic merchandise, or sits in their room for hours reading nihilist literature and/or casting spells from Barnes and Noble spellbooks. There is no label for it.
And no, there aren't different "subcategories" of the "goth" sphere. There are those that call themselves "goth", but how are they worse than those who call themselves "true" goths? Why not just be yourself and to hell with the labels?
There is no point saying "Most are teenage losers who need to validate themselves with fashion, but I, of course, am a true GOTH." It makes you sound just as arrogant and presumptuous.
Shop at Hot Topic, Abercrombie and Fitch, Value Village, wherever, just...
Don't bother categorizing everything, most especially fashion statements.

Wannabe: "I dress in black all the time and listen to Cradle Of Filth."
True: "I wear darker colors, most often black and medieval styles, and like to study philosophy and art. Wannabes suck."
Me: "I dress in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, black, white, silver, and all colors and 'styles' in between. Is an emergency vest 'gothic'? My friends are the same ways, so give up the labels.

While many think of goths as bloodsucking vampiric satanists, very little of that is true. It's not just about gobs of eyeliner and white face paint. It's about being who we ARE.
I am a goth. I am proud to be one. I don't think it matters if I dress in all black, because I'm nicer to ANYBODY than any chav could ever be? Why? Simple. Golden Rule. Too bad ignorant chavs and self centered preps have failed to realize that. And no, listening to Marilyn Manson will not make you 'goth'. Nor will he 'un-goth' you. Same with any band. I myself listen to bands like Crossfade and Disturbed, but then I also listen to heavier things like Metallica and Dragonforce. But it's not just music. It's how you are. And who you are. So before you pathetic chav's go to pick on that 'freak' think about this. Who's more pathetic? The kid in black or you, going to pick on him because your self esteem is too low and your ego too big. Not to mention your pants don't stay up.
