Crossed wires

"Crossed wires" can describe either of these situations:

1. when people who are supposedly having a conversation with each other are actually talking about completely different things

2. when a dialogue gets out of sync because people are not listening to each other - in a written dialogue this is usually because someone has posted twice before reading a reply.

The expression derives from ye olden days of analogue telephones. Sometimes when speaking on the phone in the 60s or 70s it was possible to hear another conversation on the same line. You might also pick up the phone and find that instead of a dial tone you could hear a conversation. This situation was called "crossed wires".
Example 1:
Emma: I can't wait for the weekend
Joe: Freedom at last! Next year I'm going travelling
Emma: We're throwing a party for our graduation
Joe: I'm gonna hitchhike around Europe
Emma: Everyone is invited. Hope they all come.
Joe: London Paris and Rome here I come!
Emma: You are coming aren't you?
Joe: Wanna come with me?
Emma: Crossed wires!

Example 2:
Jack: I'm sick and tired of arguing
Anna: sorry I didn't mean to upset you. I forgot that you don't like talking about politics
Jack: and I get the feeling you're trying to upset me!
Jack: sorry crossed wires

La Crosse, Wisconsin

La Crosse is a city in Wisconsin. La Crosse has only 55,000 people in it. It is are a major drinking city. La Crosse has the most bars on one street in the whole nation (thats crazy considering we only have 55,000 people), two huge breweries that supply alot of alcohol to the midwest and the rest of the nation, and the worlds largest six pack. Alcohol prices are really low, and our bars always have cheap drinks and really good specials. The Octoberfest in La Crosse is the second biggest in the world, second only to Berlin, Germany. If someone from Wisconsin tries to enter a drinking contest down south, most places wont even let you join. Wisconsin is the drunkest state in America, and La Crosse is the drunkest city in Wisconsin. There are three colleges: UWL, Virterbo, and WWTC.
If he's from La Crosse, Wisconsin he is a really good drinker.

Crossdresser

A person who dresses in clothes normally only associated with the opposite gender. A man who dresses in womens clothes is a male to female (MtF) crossdresser, a woman who dresses as a man is a female to male (FtM) crossdresser.

Crossdresser is often synonymous with the term transvestite and both only refer to the clothes a person is wearing without making any comment on which gender the person acts as (this is related to transexuality or transgenderism) or their sexuality.

My son is a crossdresser, he likes to borrow his girlfriend's skirts.

crossdreamer

A man or woman who get aroused by the idea of being the opposite sex.

Many crossdreamers identify with their birth sex, while others are gender dysphoric. Many crossdreamers understand themselves as transgender, while others consider themselves fetishists.

Many, but not all, girlfags and guydykes may be considered crossdreamers. It seems a majority of crossdreamers are attracted to persons of their own birth sex.

Crossdreamers may express their feelings through crossdressing and/or creative crossdreaming, e.g. by writing stories, comics and TG captions. Many female to male crossdreamers enjoy yaoi comics and stories, while many male to female write or read TG captions (images with short texts).

Male to female crossdreamers are labelled paraphilic "autogynephiles" in the American Psychiatric Manual (the DSM-5), while the female to male crossdreamers are not mentioned with a word. Some female to male crossdreamers are miffed by this omission, while most of them seem to sincerely enjoy this unexpected lack of stigmatisation.
