Consistent Life Ethic

Refers to the belief that human life begins at conception, and should not end unless from natural causes. The womb to tomb approach, sometimes called the seamless garment.

I'm pro consistent life ethic, so I oppose abortion, euthanasia, unjust war and the death penalty.

Non-Consistent Logic

The meta-logical framework that doesn't even try to maintain consistency, embracing contradiction as a fundamental feature rather than a bug. Non-consistent logic observes that human reasoning, natural language, and real-world systems are riddled with contradictions that we navigate daily without issue. You can believe in free will and determinism simultaneously, hold political views that don't perfectly align, and love someone while being angry at them. Non-consistent logic doesn't resolve these contradictions; it just notes that they exist and that reasoning continues anyway. It's the logic of "I contain multitudes," of holding two opposing ideas in mind without losing the ability to function, of being okay with not making sense.

Example: "He explained non-consistent logic to his therapist: 'I both want to be in this relationship and want to leave. I'm committed and ambivalent. I love her and resent her. These aren't contradictions to resolve; they're just what I feel.' The therapist said that sounded like being human. He said that was non-consistent logic—the logic of being a person, which is never as tidy as a syllogism."

Fallacy of Perfect Consistency

The logical fallacy of demanding that an opponent be perfectly consistent in everything they say or do—across contexts, over time, in every statement—while exempting oneself or one's own side from any such scrutiny. The fallacy ignores that human beings are complex, that contexts change, that learning involves changing one's mind, and that perfect consistency is impossible for any real person or movement. It's the logic of "you said X five years ago, so you can't say Y now," of "your actions don't perfectly match your words, so your words are invalid." The Fallacy of Perfect Consistency is beloved of those who want to dismiss opponents without engaging their current arguments, who would rather dig up old contradictions than address present claims. The cure is recognizing that consistency is not a binary state but a spectrum, and that growth, learning, and context all produce apparent contradictions that are actually signs of life.

Example: "He found a tweet she'd written ten years ago, before she'd studied the issue, before she'd changed her mind. 'Aha!' he declared. 'Inconsistency! Your current views are invalid!' The Fallacy of Perfect Consistency had done its work: avoiding engagement with her current arguments by appealing to her past self. She'd learned, grown, evolved—but to him, that was weakness, not strength."

Enforced Consistency Fallacy

The fallacy of demanding consistency in situations where consistency doesn't matter, where logic isn't the primary framework, or where different contexts legitimately call for different approaches. Common in political and social debates: "You criticized X, but you support Y—hypocrite!" The demand for perfect consistency ignores that humans are contextual, that principles interact, and that life requires judgment, not algorithmic uniformity.

"You say we should help the homeless but also support economic growth—that's inconsistent!" That's Enforced Consistency Fallacy. Those goals might conflict sometimes; they might also complement. Life isn't a logic puzzle—consistency isn't the highest virtue, and demanding it is often a way to avoid engaging with complexity."
