One who specializes in toasting thin slices of bread slowly so that they become hard and crunchy without browning. This role is also known as “a maker of melba toast.”

He was out of crackers for his afternoon cheese snack, but as he was an experienced melber, he was able to create an acceptable cracker substitute of hard, pale toast. Sadly, he broke three teeth on the first bite.
