"Off the hook" is a phrase describing a disappointing, mundane, or unpleasant experience or event.
This refers to the scene the movie The Cell, where the hero suspends himself from the ceiling with hooks through his skin. It provides a sense of weightlessness and freedom from the stress of everyday life. Being forced off the hooks drags him back to the brutal realities of women using him to harm themselves.
"My girlfriend came home early, so I found myself off the hook prematurely and had to release my captives before completing my master plan."
A truly outrageous party or gathering. To recieve this moniker, the experience should of transcended the norm and in fact gone way beyond it - to realms that are (almost) void of defintion. The happiness, love and sheer exuberance of it all should of reminded everyone in attendance the joy of what is to be alive. Off the hook is as close as we've got thus far to describe such an event. Use sparingly.
"How was your weekend Jim?"
"Jesus, fucking Christ, it was insane, completely and utterly off hook!"
"Oh, very well. I need thoseinsurance reports on my desk first thing!"
