Droitwich

A dance on the sidewalk of a busy street, whereby the partners approach from opposite ends of the pavement to meet in the middle. The pair step to the left, step to the right, appologise, step to the left, laugh, step to the right, appologise and so on. This can happen as many times as neccessary until one of the partners extends their arms to indicate which way he/she will manouvour around their partner.

I hate walking down Queen St at rush hour. Today I had a droitwich with the smelliest guy. I think he was doing it on purpose.

An archaic law that guarenteed the ruler of a particular place (a king, a lord, a baron ect.) first night privileges with any bride in his domain on her wedding night. Out of use today.

Word Origin: French. Literally means "Right of the master"

In the movie "Braveheart", William and Murron marry in secret to avoid Murron being forced to sleep with the King because of the droit de seigneur.

In the tv show "The Office" Michael says he is instituting "Prima Nocta" to ensure that everyone dresses properly for Phyllis' wedding. He later admits he misconstrued the meaning of the phrase.
