Digital Gang Up

A coordinated or emergent phenomenon where multiple individuals or entities collectively target, harass, attack, or mob a person or group through digital means. Unlike simple disagreement or criticism, a digital gang up involves numbers being used as a weapon—the experience of being swarmed, overwhelmed, and drowned out by a volume of hostile engagement that no individual could withstand. The gang up may be organized (through coordinated raids, dogpiling, brigade tactics) or emergent (when a post goes viral and attracts a mob), but the experience for the target is identical: a flood of notifications, threats, abuse, and noise designed to silence, punish, or destroy. Digital gang ups exploit the asymmetry of networked communication—one target, countless attackers, each individual feeling justified while the collective produces overwhelming harm.
Example: "She posted a mildly controversial opinion and woke to thousands of replies—not debate, but a Digital Gang Up, the collective weight of a mob made possible by the architecture of the platform."

Internet Gang Up

A broader phenomenon encompassing any coordinated or emergent mob attack conducted through internet-mediated means, across platforms, protocols, and spaces. Where "digital gang up" might emphasize the digital nature of the attack, "internet gang up" emphasizes the network itself—the way information travels, mobs form, and coordination happens across the entire internet ecosystem. An internet gang up might start on Twitter, spread to Reddit, generate YouTube videos, leak into Discord servers, spawn blog posts, and result in doxxing, harassment, and real-world consequences. The target experiences not just a platform-specific attack but the full weight of the networked mob, amplified and sustained by the internet's architecture of virality and persistence. Internet gang ups are what happens when the mob discovers you and the network makes escape impossible.
Example: "The controversy followed her across every platform—Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, even her professional email—an Internet Gang Up that demonstrated the network's capacity to coordinate destruction across every digital space she occupied."

Community Gang Up

A mob attack emerging from and enacted by a community, whether online or offline, where the collective weight of community opinion, action, and sanction is brought to bear against an individual or subgroup. Community gang ups are distinguished by their source—not strangers coordinating, but the community itself acting as mob. The target experiences not just attack but expulsion, the withdrawal of belonging, the transformation of what felt like home into a hostile space. Community gang ups may be organized (through community leaders calling for action) or emergent (through viral community sentiment), but they share the unique horror of being attacked by one's own people, exiled from one's own place.
Example: "She'd helped build that neighborhood association, considered them family—then a dispute escalated into a Community Gang Up, and she found herself shunned by people she'd known for decades."

Social Gang Up

The broadest category of mob attack, encompassing any collective action where social pressure, exclusion, harassment, or punishment is applied by a group against an individual or smaller group within a social context. Social gang ups can occur anywhere humans gather—in workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, families, online spaces, institutions. They represent the fundamental danger of human sociality: our capacity to coordinate against each other, to use our numbers as weapons, to destroy through collective action what we could never harm individually. Social gang ups are what make gossip lethal, what make ostracism devastating, what make mobs possible. They are the shadow side of community, the proof that our need to belong can be weaponized against us.
Example: "It started with whispers, then exclusion from lunch, then a formal complaint, then everyone pretending she didn't exist—a Social Gang Up that used every tool of human community to destroy one of its members."

Server Gang Up

A mob attack occurring within a specific online server or community space (such as Discord, Slack, Minecraft, or forum communities), where members of that server collectively target an individual. Server gang ups are particularly intimate and destructive because they occur within spaces that may have felt like community, among people who may have been considered friends or allies. The target experiences not just attack but betrayal—the community they belonged to turning on them, often with the active participation of moderators or administrators who should provide safety. Server gang ups reveal that community itself can become a weapon, that belonging can be revoked with devastating speed, and that the spaces we trust can become the sites of our destruction.
Example: "He'd been in the Discord for two years, thought they were friends—then one misunderstood comment triggered a Server Gang Up, and he watched people he'd gamed with for years join the mob against him."
