Parents that hover over their children, hawkishly "helping" them face the college learning scenario. It is debated whether or not parents that hover are good or bad for their child's overall development.
Jan: Are Jane's helicopter parents back in town this weekend?
Judy: Do you really have to ask that question? They're ALWAYS in town for the weekend.
Jan: Poor, poor Jane.
Jan and Judy weep for Jane's sad existence.

Asian parents consume themselves with getting their child into an Ivy League, compare their child to other children, and/or act strictly toward their children. For example, asian parents typically sign their children up for summer school without their child's knowledge or consent, only to tell their children the day before that they must attend the summer school that they were signed up for. They are characterized but not limited to parents of asian descent.
Scott: "Sorry I could not see that movie yesterday. My parents made me stay home because they were scared I was going to party too much. Instead, they made me stay home and work on my Harvard application for eight hours."
Jeff: "Wow. Too bad you have asian parents. We had a great time yesterday."

A step parent is someone who assumes the role of parent, is married to one of the biological parents, and is not a biological parent. Sometimes this person is more of a parent to the child than the biological parent, sometimes this person is not.
My biological dad's fourth wife is my step mother. The guy I call dad is my biological mother's second husband.
