A group of African Americans which limits its membership to "blue veins" or light skinned black people. During the turn of the century there were self-proclaimed Blue Vein Societies in dozens of US cities representing the miniscule Black upper and upper-middle classes. The societies aped partician white "Blue Blood Socieities" (satirzed by Edith Wharton) and their cheif purpose seems to have been to sponsor balls as meeting places for elgible "blue veined" youth.
The African American write Charles W. Chestnutt describes the origin of the term in the quote below when talking about the Cleveland Blue Vein Society.

Get the Menace II Societymug. An exclusive club open to students who have at least a B+ average. About 99% of the people in NHS could honestly care less about the club itself and the only reason they joined in the first place is because they know they have good grades and just want it to look good on a college application. These people on NHS could care less about helping the school and their community as long as they can use being on NHS to get into a good college/university. However, there actually, usually is one or two students on NHS who actually join it out of the goodness of their hearts.

In each hotel they stay in, they remove a painting on the wall and paint their own artwork behind it, then when they are finished they put the painting back on the wall so their own art work is unseen. Then, when the hotel room is redecorated, the picture is taken down and the people are shocked to find another person has painted a fabulous artwork behind it!
