Rapping (also known as emceeing, MCing, spitting, or just rhyming) is the rhythmic spoken delivery of rhymes and wordplay, one of the elements of hip hop music and culture. Rap is NOT a genre a music, but rapping, or MCing is a part of the genre "Hip-Hop". Hip-Hop also consists of graffiti art, DJing, MCing(rapping), and breaking.
Today, almost all mainstream rap has completely sold out to mainstream America. Mainstream rap has NO self expression in it, and does not represent itself well anymore. More and more artists try to get a hit song, rather than express themselves- or a good album. So anyone that thinks "rap" is what they see on TV (Soulja Boy, 50 Cent, etc.) is definately wrong. In fact, most of these shitty rappers don't even represent their DJ. "Bling rap" is BULLSHIT.
Good rap flows, and not just relies on the beat, it works with it. Rap is all about expression, but has been capitalized on as of late, unfortunately. There are some rappers and hip-hop artists that still keep it real though, but almost all of them are underground- if still active.
For all the people that think rappers like "Soulja Boy, 50 Cent, Chingy, and Chamillionaire" are real, you're wrong. That's "Hip-POP", and it sucks. There is no expression in Hip-Pop, but there is always expression from a real Hip-Hop rapper.
For all the people out there that think rap/hip-hop is what they see on TV, and people rapping about their shopping lists or other miscellaneous bullshit- I urge you to listen to some real Hip-Hop MCs.

Get the rapmug. Back in the day i listened to my fair share of rap. DMX, Nas, 2pac, Biggie, Jay-Z, etc. good rap music. Rap in this current decade, i'm sorry folks, is nothing but talentless garbage. The ideal example is Soulja Boy's brilliantly written song, "YAAAHHHH!"...is this a joke??, rappers such as him, 50 cent, the whole G-Unit crew, don't even get me started with lil' wayne who throws simile after simile, metaphor after metaphor while using strange accents and 95% gibberish. The music industry has truly lowered its standards with this new genre of rap. Some of the lyrics i read/hear truly make me laugh do to the idiotic words molded together which is what they call their so called rhymes. Nowadays, anyone could write a 3 minute song, rhyme random words together that don't necessarily have to make sense, throw in some shitty beat and call it a hit. Sex, hoe's, money, and clubs are what rap revolves around. Truly is humorous.
"Yo i was in da club, i told da bitch she a nub. Her man be talkin shit so i hit him wit my dick".

Get the Rapmug. Rap is a distinctly simple, linear, and overly synth-driven pop genre that relies heavily on rhyming words set to monotonous programed beats that loop over and over.
Can be characterized by an over-produced, bloated and streamlined sugar-coated pop sound void of any sonic creativity or musical craftsmanship.
Is overly simple, saturated, and without soul compared to almost all forms of Rock music.

"Yo, can I pop in this fuckin tight rap CD by Jay-Z, dawg?"
"Sorry 'dawg', I only play music in my car."

Get the rapmug. Rap is the latest musical craze that exhibits the deterioration of musical talent. Rappers do not need musical talent as there are no instruments being played and there is no vocal range. Rather, they need to put words against a simple, repetitive beat. The words are described by rap fans as poetic and meaningful. When simply writing melodic songs gets to be too complicated (and, remember, that's all they have to do), they have to resort to making up words to keep the flow. They also typically resort to the tried-but-unfortunately-true formula of drugs, sex, and casual crime. Granted, there are rappers out there like 2-Pac and Run-DMC that wrote high-quality songs but, in light of the Age of MTV, such talent in the genre exists only underground. Rap is typically angry and can be considered "the black man's metal." We all know that metal also sounds like tripe noise with no melody but has its genius exceptions like Nine Inch Nails and Black Sabbath. In the end, the reason many of us don't like rap is that it has such a simple musical structure that anyone can really pull off. All of the rappers you see on TV these days don't have the talent or abilities that the past legends like the Beatles or Stones had. They just need to write down some sort of song, find cheap ways to make it sound melodic, and put it against a repetitive beat. As if anyone needs more reason to dislike rap (remember, though I do not like it, I accept underground rap as having some talent), the greatest solo artist in music, Bob Dylan, hates rap. Does that say enough?
Despite the fact that some artists had talent (like 2-Pac and Run-DMC), rap has become a simply, corporate musical form that appeals mostly to teenagers because adults know how bad it really is.
