way back in the day the word retarded was considered proper terminology when referring to people with mental disabilities nowadays the word retarded or retard is used as a hurtful slurs against people who have mental disabilities

Get the National retard daymug. An adjective that was originally just a synonym for slow. In the 20th century the word was used in the term mentally retarded, a broad term used to describe people with mental handicaps. Because of this, the word became strongly associated with mental disability. As time passed, people began using the word Retarded to describe people, places or things that they found dumb or unappealing. Later on, the use of the word became considered offensive or taboo by many people, because of it's association with mental disabilities.
