A person who calls someone a "poser" when the word that they really mean to use, but are to much of a poseur to realize, is "poseur".
So, I came across these guys online today that where totally thinking they were all punk. I was like, "Have you even heard of the Ramones? Because I'm pretty familiar with their music!" They didn't know what I was talking about!!!! :-o Wow, these guys where SUCH a bunch of posers!

Someone that tries to follow whatever some one else that they admire does. They are fake to them selves. They are something they are not that is whay people hate them. Also because they are extremly annoying. They don't have a life besides being soemthing that is fake. My advice to posers be who you are. If you are really ghetto and trying to follow the HXC style be ghetto. Thats being true to yourself. Dont try to act emo when you really hate it inside. If you feel alone and helpless then try something that you truly enjoy. If the popular Clique in your school is prep and you try to be prep your going to be misrable inside because thats what you are not. Be true to yourself thats the key to happiness.

a person who likes something just because they have heard that someone else likes them. someone who wouldn't understand the meaning behind the lyrics or the thoughts and feelings. someone who says they are when they aren't and are so obviously following along. someone who is so fake it's sickening.
person1: so i'm gonna go buy this AFI cd.
person2: what's AFI?
person1: just this band i like.
person2: what does it stand for?

person2: eww, they're so scary looking

A name given to a person based on his/her fashion sense or musical tastes by people who think that:
A. Just because someone is wearing clothes from Hot Topic it means that they're trying to be goth, or
B. Just because someone listens to The Ramones it means that they're trying to be punk.
There are some more examples, but these are some of the more common ones. Most people that call others posers are saying that these people are trying to be goths or punks. These people never consider that maybe, just maybe.. these guys simply like the clothes or music!
It has nothing to do with what they want to BE, but simply what they LIKE, so they go ahead and do it. It's like assuming that just because a white guy wants to rap, that he's automatically a wigger. Rap doesn't automatically mean you're gonna speak in ebonics and rap about bitches and hoes, or how "gangsta" you are. Only when that IS the case.. you can go and call him a wigger, but otherwise, no.
It's the same with these so-called "goths" and "punks". A stud-belt from Hot Topic doesn't mean that person slits his wrists and cries all day because his life sucks, nor does liking the band Green Day mean that person wants to rebel against society, get a mohawk, and tell everyone else to fuck off.
However.. the easiest way to tell a true poser from a non-poser would be that, if a poser actually gets called a poser, he/she'd overreact quite angrily and surprised.
