fever dream

A fever dream is a state of mental delirium experienced due to intense sickness. It is likened to a dream in that it is associated with a disconnect from reality and loss of coherence, understanding and awareness of your surroundings.

It is often used as an analogy for an unpleasant experience which seems too strange or traumatic to be real.

That party last night with those girls and the cocaine still has my head spinning, it was like one big fever dream.
That the house fire with all the screaming and crying was such a horrible experience, I'm still traumatised from it, it feels like a fever dream.

I was so sick drifting in and out of consciousness and delirious, i didn't know what was real and what wasn't, a literal fever dream.
