The world's GREATEST instrument when it comes to orchestras. Many people say that the viola is the target of most of the orchestra jokes, but the truth is that almost every joke has an insert instrument name herescenario. Besides, how could anyone hate violas? Violins are like Icing on a cake. It's nice, but if you have to much of it, you want to throw up. The 2nd best orchestra instrument is the Cello, the 3rd best is the bass, and the worst is the violin.
Studies show that the more violas you have in an orchestra, the better the orchestra is. The viola offers a rich sound, not as high pitched, screachy, and annoying as a violin, but higher than a cello and more portable. As an added bonus, it's easier to whack other people with it and its bow because both weigh more than a violin.
The only down side to a viola vs. a violin is that a violin can play fiddle/celtic music easier because it is lighter. Then again, most rock bands that incorporate orchestra/classical music into their songs use more violas than violins because they're cooler and deeper sounding. Oh, and by the way, for those of you that pronounce it "Vigh-ola", it's really pronounced "Vee-ola", so get it right, cuz it's really fuckin' annoying.

an amazing 4 string instrument that is larger in size and personality then a violin. It sounds more like a cello, only an octive lower. The strings are(from lowest to highest)C-G-D-A. Viola players are usually the most underappreciated of the entire orchestra. They generally get sucky parts and little attention. The instrument itself is beautiful if played correctly.
The entire viola section was appaled at the discustingly simple parts they were issued to play while the violins had 100% of the melody and it was even challenging.

An instrument nobody knows off in an orchestra and thinks is a violin. It is also one of two instruments that uses alto cleff.

Larger than the violin but smaller than the cello. It sounds sort of chocolaty, but playing it is difficult because it's range is fit in an instrument like 30 % too small. Like the 2nd best instrument in the orchestra, behind cello. Often underappreciated, but it's really one of the best instruments out there. Violists themselves are quite eccentric- a big bundle of different personalaties.
The violas like to call themselves the meat of the orchestra sandwich, which basically means that they like to hide under the pieces of bread rather than call too much attention to themselves. Violists have to struggle with an instrument whose range is forced into a sounding body of air which is perhaps 30 percent smaller than the acoustically appropriate volume. This makes for a constant quest for the ideal viola sound (which some would say would be the viola sitting in its case) and the distinct air of the absent-minded professor amongst violists. If you need someone to fix your computer, start with the viola section.
