The act of increasing the quality of a crap neighborhood to livable, sanitary conditions, thereby removing the property value from the toilet and basically polishing a turd. Racists hate it because it typically means more of the evil, oppressive Equinsu Ocha, and criminals hate it because crime rates typically plummet. The parasite class is sometimes resultingly displaced in favor of the working middle-class. An unfortunately occasional by-product of gentrification is an increase in a liberal presence which benefits nobody.
The coffee shop and new park which replaced the two old crack houses are quite an upgrade to the neighborhood (thank goodness for gentrification)!

Get the Gentrification mug."Poor blacks and black businesses are being pushed out of Harlem in favor of elite whites. Bill Clinton is a perfect symbol of the reality of the white takeover. He is opening the floodgates now for complete gentrification of Harlem." -- Black Panther Party spokesman Malik Zulu Shabazz, April 2001

Get the gentrification mug. When something once known as something made by or popular with women is suddenly taken over by men and essentially becomes something that women can't be interested in/partake in anymore. Then said thing will be vigorously protected by gatekeepers who will try and keep women out of it and will shun women still in the community. This can work in reverse with women also, which can be called Womanification.
Woman 1: Remember when Star Trek was something you and I would talk about in our living rooms over tea before all of this convention stuff came around?
Woman 2: I remember that quite clearly, now I can't even mention I like the show around other fans. Otherwise they'll bombard me with questions like "Who was the very first captions' mother's name????" rudely and expect me not to answer, and when I do they just insult me and call me a 'fake fan' anyways!
Woman 1: Damn, the Mentrification of Star Trek really hit hard huh?

Get the Gentrification mug.An idea that the rising popularity in thrifting will increase the prices of second hand clothes in less wealthy areas, making it less affordable for the people that live there.
This may be true to an extent, however the increase in price would only be on high branded or popular items and doesn't take into account that not every item in store is branded, or that every person living on the breadline wants to be rocking a 90's Tommy grail.
This idea is shared amongst people that don't have any knowledge on the true scale of second hand clothing and think it will mean people will not be able to afford clothes anymore or that there is not enough to go around. This is completely false.
