In British Somaliland, the term "warrior" was picked up by natives from colonisers, similar to pidgin words it was simplified to "warya" by the natives who used it to refer to each other as a sign of strength to overcome resistance. After Somalia gained independence, the word would become widespread across all regions and be used in colloquial Somali language as the calling of a person.
