Apocryphal attribution to isolated denizens of Appalachian Mountains,(Eastern USA) descendants of some of the earliest Scotch-English settlers, who seem to have had some proclivity for naming their children "William" (familiarly "Bill")and some not inconsiderable inclination to incestuous sexual congress. More recently, the term is used to describe any rural resident,especially in the Southern USA and particularly those living in rather rough-hewn conditions, embracing noticably parochial ideologies and a generally hostile attitude.

When the hillbillies moved into the trailer park, they maintained their habits of firing off their revolvers at odd hours and cohabiting with their livestock.

Someone who shoots "varmints" with his/her rifle and squaredances in the wee hours of the morning, often at "hoedowns". They say words lyke "spiffy" and "nifty" and enjoy playing the banjo and harmonica. They typically wear overalls with one of the straps undone, straw hat, and no shoes and have a piece of straw hanging outta their mouth. And when they laugh, they dont say hahaha, they say "ahurhur!"

n. People, primarily in the Appalachian region of the South, who are isolated from civilization and cannot therefore assimilate into modern culture. They differ from rednecks in, that, rednecks live in close proximity to both civilization and modern culture, however, they choose not to assimilate, whereas a hillbilly cannot assimilate.
