They are the type to lie, cheat, and steal their way into things or even go against the law or even be seen as an outright villain. However, the villain is who the audience despises and detaches themselves from while the anti-hero is whom we cheer and root for. The Anti-Hero has an ambiguous morality between good and bad and depending on the story decide where there fate goes with the thought of a type of redemption as a hero or becoming corrupt as a villain.
Many Anti-Heroes are often the types the audience would resonate towards than the one dimensional goody two shoes heroes.

Hero's protect, anti-heros destroy. Hero's rescue victims, Antiheroes create victims and perceive themselves as one. Hero's are reliable narrators, anti-heros are not. As a hero grows into his cape, as it were, we find the anti-hero's ego outgrowing everything and everyone, eclipsing everything else.
A hero is a hero in actions, he doesn't need you to know it or tell him so. An anti-hero needs you to validate how hard they had it and how they moulded that into gold- They are walking contradictions, and the journey ends when their egos become so massive, they collapse in on themselves like a dying star. Most of them are social outcasts, who have no desire for foolish things such as 'friendship' or 'trust'. An antihero can be a jerk, or even have every characteristic of a villain, but because success wouldn't be possible without their help, they are still considered good guys. Due to the fact that antiheros are not stupid, they probably won't do anything helpful unless they are paid, or unless there is some fine huny connected with the plot. Antiheros are 97% better off than most people in the world, in the way that, they are good guys, but they're not stupid, and they actually give a damn about money.
Hero: Oh no! I seem to be suspended upside-down over boiling lava, while several incredibly hot, young, teenage girls are being held hostage!
