Get the Neopronouns mug.Neopronouns (or Neos) are non-standard 3rd-Person pronouns (like he, it) used in some lgbt/mogai spaces. Neopronouns are newly and intentionally created words, like a neologism (e.g. spork, deepfake, etc). The term ‘Neopronoun’ was likely developed in the 2010’s, possibly out of the MOGAI scene of tumblr. Neopronouns include Xe/Xir and Fae/Faer. Despite the novelty of the term, Neopronouns have existed throughout the English language. The earliest possible example is from the writings of William Marshall, who documented “ou” as a pronoun. A more concrete example came from Charles C. Converse, a grammarian who suggested thon/thonself as a Gender neutral 3rd person pronoun, it saw brief success and was included in the 1934 edition of the Merriam-Webster dictionary. A subset of neopronouns are noun-self pronouns. Such as Lun/Luns, Scor/Scorps, and Voi/Void. These are separated by being based on an existing noun, like Scorpio in Scor/Scorps. There are also Xenopronouns (Xenos), are separate from Neopronouns. Xenopronouns, described as not being able to be communicated by human language, are often presented by one using just their name. Neopronouns receive massive backlash, as they are seen as nonsensical, rude, too modern, or inconvenient. They are often seen as detrimental even in the queer community, like TERF (trans exclusionary radical feminists) lesbians to transgender people.
