It is the state of being shackled by doxa (δόξα) — the false "reality" of collective opinion, contextual framing, and mandated narratives — rather than reaching episteme (true knowledge) or direct seeing.

Doxa (δόξα) = opinion, belief, appearance — the false "reality" most live in, mistaking shadows for truth (Plato's big theme).
Desmos (δεσμός) = bond, chain, fetter, prison — literal shackles, but metaphor for anything binding the mind/soul.
