It can also be used to refer to free things handed out at conventions, though this is less common and less well known.
More recently the phrase, having long since gone out of style, has begun to be mocked. First taking on a more sexual tone, generally being used to say someone is good at picking up chicks/guys, people have now taken to making fun of people who use the phrase by claiming it is an acronym for "Secretly we are gay". They appear to be unaware of the fact that this implies they, as well as the speaker, are gay.
