Poverty Belt

Poverty Belt is a growing term being used by people who live in the northeastern US to describe Central New York. Central New York is a geographical region of upstate New York which lies between the Catskill mountains and the Adirondacks. It is comprised of the cities Albany, Utica, Syracuse, Binghamton, Buffalo and Rochester (which is often referred to as Crotch-Chester). Common characteristics of this region which account for the sobriquet include scarcity of jobs, high unemployment, a shrinking population and a crumbling infrastructure. The "belt" part of the term comes from the way the aforementioned cities are horizontally situated close to the New York state thruway which runs from East to West through the middle part of the state.

Southern Poverty Law Center

Civil rights organization that collects information about hate groups. SPLC-affiliated lawyers also file lawsuits to enforce the constitutional rights of Americans who are denied them by the authorities.

As the name implies, beneficiaries of the SPLC include people who are poor, and require legal protection from either racist violence or abusive, indifferent agents of the state.

Bernard Monroe Sr., an elderly black man, was shot to death on his front porch by a white police officer who had entered his house in Homer, La., without apparent justification or a warrant. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) filed a wrongful death lawsuit that alleged two white officers created a volatile situation when they entered Monroe's property during a gathering of his family and friends on Feb. 20, 2009.

Used to describe :

1) a place that has alot of poor people (a slum)
2) a person who is very poor
3) a condition of being very poor

Poverty spec

A term used to ridicule people who buy the lowest spec of a certain car or the cheapest car a high-end brand offers, just to say they drive that car or own a car from that brand.
