This is common with ethnicities with strong family bonds who use guilt to maintain closeness, such as, italians, mexicans, armenians, indians, persians, and jews.

Heather: Hey Jenny, are you going to the match.com event tonight?
Jenny: I can't, family sabotage, I have to help my niece with her homework tonight.

James: Dude, are you going to Stephanie's birthday party tonight?
Henry: Ugh, no, family sabotage, I have to babysit my nephew.
