It is used to address a person(s) who plays the table-top game Dungeons and Dragons (or enjoys other nerdy hobbies), which was co-created by Gary Gygax. As "My brother in Christ" has developed more nuances, this adoptive phrase has as well, and may not be intended as addressing someone who is acting in error or ignorance.
