Ladder leads to mythical creatures having normal proficiencies: A werewolf as dog care employee; A vampire doctor who knows by the taste of your blood what the problem is; ...

When magic takes place in a modern setting it may be an Urban Magic setting.

Hood Magic

When you’re born into a well off lifestyle, but you abandon that lifestyle and move to the hood or pretend that you grew up there, all to adopt the lifestyle.

Changing behavioral characteristics from proper to hoodlike behavioral characteristics in order to fully adopt the lifestyle. (Not born into the hood lifestyle).
Hence behaving hood when you were raised in a white picket fence type suburban neighborhood.

Them island boys are straight Hood Magic.

They didn’t grow up hood but they pretend they are hood now.
