throtole

The origin of the modern day brazier. During the industrial revolution in Stockport circa 1770. Once the heat from the burning coke had melted through the sides of the furnace body, the body would be cut off from what was known as the "throat" of the furnace. The body and small section of flue pipe that constituted the throat would then be used to burn offcuts of wood to heat the companies warehouses.

The holes around the base from where the coke had burned through would allow plenty of air to enter the fire from the base and cause the wood to burn at higher than normal temperatures.

Before the top section started routinely being removed as a lid, all wood was fed into the furnace through the "throat hole" which gradually became "Throtole".

It wasnt until 1835 when a company called brazier made their first mass produced Throtole and the name became synonymous that the original name "Throtole" fell out of common use.
