A rather descriptive term for depression.

Refers to how it has never been fully understood after centuries, how it truly reaches depths beyond description, and how it lurks among human beings without any regard for success, social status, abundance of friends, or nobility of spirit.

Also hints at its attitude for invisibility beyond the confines of one's mind. Even your best friend could be living in a world of pain, yet it might be impossible for you to even suspect it.

It is, in many ways, the only source of death that remains truly unexplained.

Term from Italian (il male oscuro).

Winston Churchill was perhaps one of the most respected politicians of all times, and was a major force in the defeat of Nazi Germany. None of this mattered to the dark illness.
