“1 ml short of an inch” is essentially a joke. Mixing millilitres (volume) with inches (length) gives this idiom an absurd, confused and humorous edge.

Close, but not quite there.

Almost there.

Someone who’s slightly off in thinking, in a funny or endearing way.

Someone that’s pulling the wool over your eyes.

Close but no cigar.

If you had brains you’d be dangerous.

If your balls weren’t in a bag you’d lose them.

It’s about almost having the full picture but missing the key piece that reveals the trick.

The swapped measurements between imperial and metric systems creates a sense of not only being short, but also being mismatched or confused in the attempt.

I followed the recipe exactly, except I swapped sugar to salt. Turns out I was 1ml short of an inch
