From Amazing Grace to A Floating Opportunity

An old Southern term an African-American mother uses to describe an long and sometimes well deserved, ass-whooping in order to warn her child, or others who cross her. This African-American saying, used as a motherly warning, first popped up in the 1930 play Mule Bone by Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston.

“You’d better behave, or I’ll knock you from amazing grace to a floating opportunity!”

Mopped the Floor

To put someone, or something, to complete shame, or humiliation, and to better it in every capacity; to utterly outdo, outperform or outwit. The phrase is used to conjure sentiments of shaming to the point of using that thing for the lowly task of mopping the floor with. Generally used in past, or more rarely, future or prospective tense.

1. Peyton Manning just mopped the floor with Tom Brady.

2. That kid just mopped the floor of that Pogs tournament!

3. Gandalf would totally mop the floor with Harry Potter.

Floater

A person without a set group of friends or place to belong to. They drift aAround and meet new people, usually if dating someone. But if that relationship fails, they move onto the next lucky/unlucky clique. Floaters can either work alone or with a partner, but never exist as more than two people. Floaters are usually strange, creative, troubled, and/or have an offbeat sense of humor. Floaters usually don't mind being a floater, although bouts of loneliness may strike at times. A floater is usually single and plays the field.

After breaking up with her boyfriend, Ilona the floater found a new group of friends.

"Oh I only sit with my best friend. I'm a floater."
