They could be held at hotels, camps, other people's houses, etc. They are supposed to be a weekend full of learning and keeping Shabbat and doing other Jewish stuff, but teens usually go to these shabbatons to get away from their parents and to bond with other teens and they do drugs, drink alcohol, and hook up with each other and trash the place that they are staying in.
