Passerine

An SBI fan fiction that will break your heart. Available on ao3 (and wattpad I suppose), it is essentially an analysis of grief, the way it affects people and how it is overcome, or more accurately, embraced.

At 76 000 words you can finish it in less than 5 hours, if not less than 3, but you will feel echoes of pain through your entire being for up to 70 years after reading. Upon rereading, the foreshadowing can and will tear your soul to pieces.

Also could be a song by The Oh Hellos, a Christian music group whose song the fanfic takes the name and chapter names from. True kids raised in church/cults will recognise the obvious references to the bible, (pushing the spear into your side again and again), but without context it's just a nice song about belonging and guilt and grief.

Person 1: "There was a terrible, terrible silence—the kind of silence that always came before something devastating. The calm before the storm. Tommy had always hated silences. It gave his mind too many spaces to fill with darkness. So he brought light, instead. Noise and laughter and jokes and jibes, anything to keep the quiet at bay."

Person 2: "STOP JUST SENDING PASSERINE QUOTES IN THE GROUP CHAT YOU'LL MAKE ME CRY"

passer-drive

a person you work with and who could give you a lift to work or home as he/she drives there by car, but does not do it as he/she focuses so much on driving and the road that he/she does not see you standing on the sidewalk and waiting for a bus;

in fact he/she would not see you even if there was nothing around except for the bus stop and you;

sometimes it is done on purpose because the person simply does not give a damn about you standing there and waiting

Morgan: Hey man! What took you so long? The boss asked about you.
Jake: Damn buses and damn Jackson!
Morgan: What?
Jake: Yup, the bus broke down and the other one was to come in 20 minutes. I saw Jackson in his Taurus, I waved, but of course he pretended that he didn't see me. Sorry-ass passer-drive!
