Phobia

1. Psychologically induced, irrational fear of something that should not be all that scary.

2. In common usage, phobia is nothing more than something to accuse others of having when one wants to discount their opinions and be excused to behave in a way that they think is wrong.
1950s:
You shouldn't do that!
Fraidy cat!

1990s to present:
That's disgusting!
Don't tell me you have a phobia!

Phobia

A phobia is a fear of something of a general area - i.e. Arachnophobia is the fear of spiders, not just being afraid of specific spiders like the Black Widow or Tarantula. Phobias can range from slight panic attacks when overwhelmed in a crowd, to not being willfully strong enough to leave your house.

Some phobias can be rational or irrational. Phobias can also be caused by a personal experience, such as how I gained a phobia of emotional attachment to people.

phobias

Extremely exaggerated and irrational fears of things. Arachniphobia is an extreme and irrational fear of spiders. Someone suffering from this will either run terrified from the sight of it or possibly pass out and faint from pure fear.
I am extremely happy that I do not have ANY phobias. You should be too, unless you do have one, then your just an irrational pussy. Get over it.

-Phobia

Something people always use to reject criticism of whatever subject it is. It means that people have an irrational fear or hatred of something. Legitimate uses of -phobia would be saying a person that fears spiders is arachnophobia, or arachnophobic for a person specifically scared of spiders. However, calling someone transphobic because they believe transgenderism is a mental disease is NOT accurate. For example, calling me an autistophobic because I believe autism is a mental disease or OCDphobic because I believe OCD is a mental disease are clearly not accurate.
Often in media, -phobia, such as islamophobia, is used to vilify people that are critical of a belief, theory, or fact. This is inaccurate, as a correct example would be “He is homophobic, meaning that he is hateful towards homosexuals.”

cop-phobia

The fear of law enforcement types. A dread of any police. Paranoia towards a badge and gun carrier.
As the driver glanced into the rear view mirror while waiting for a red light to turn green, they saw a patrol car pulling up behind them. Instantly their cop-phobia kicked in.
