Part of the series' claim to fame is that it parodies popular culture and gaming tropes: the main character Neptune represents the defunct SEGA Neptune, her sister Nepgear represents the SEGA Game Gear, etc.
The series has a long list of titles that spans the PS3 and PS Vita, with a new game released on the PS4. Hyperdimension Neptunia has received criticism in the West for supposedly supporting mysogyny and sexism, although this is not true. Quite the opposite, in fact. The games show that females can be portrayed as sexy yet strong and independent.
Despite the criticism, however, the games have done the seemingly impossible: Western RPG lovers have fallen in love with Neptune and her friends. Although a relatively small title in the West, the Neptunia titles make millions for developer Compile Heart.
