Based on the 70's amateur 'talent' show, the Gong Show. Applied to entertainment, it means cheesy and out of control, OR completely ruined through the good intentions of amateurs.
They had three bands scheduled, but the first one was the total gong show, so almost everyone left.

Although it can mean many things its mostly anything out of control really bad or funny. Gongshow is the most popular of the endless hockey slang used throughout canada and even in the united states. other words include puck bunny, puck slut, plug, duster, swampdonkey, gonger, and much more.

Used to describe a situation that is tumultuous, circus-like, and has spun out-of-control. Originates from the 1970s variety show of the same name, though some users many not be aware of the source.
Amelia: My love life is such a gong show!
