Fruitcake

1) The word fruitcake has come to mean someone who is round the bend, out to lunch, completely fucking mad. It came from the old British slang"Nutty as a fruitcake"(fruitcakes have got nuts in, ya see), because, as you know we've used the slang term "Nutters" for the insane for....well ever, really.

2) I do believe that some American people call gay people fruitcakes. I know that the term "fruit" has been used as a slightly derogatory term for Gay men(in the UK any way), but I'm really not sure where the "cakes" bit came from, or why!.

2)....Err not sure really!! I've never heard "fruitcake" used in this context. But "Fruit":

Few apples short of a fruitcake

A snowclone to express that someone is either stupid or crazy. The standard format is "a few X short of (a) Y", the idea being that Y is something that, with a few X missing, is not so good, and in the case of a person being compared to such, that something is "missing" in their thought process.
This one in particular has the appeal that fruitcakes involve nuts, thus further solidifying the point that the person is nuts themselves.

Did you see how Bob just flipped out over nothing. Is he having some sort of psychotic break?
Yeah, he seems to be a few apples short of a fruitcake. Might be best to keep our distance.
