The study of, and purported technologies for interacting with, the "astral plane"—a hypothesized non-physical dimension of existence accessible through consciousness. This includes mapping astral topography, understanding the physics of thought-form projection, and categorizing non-corporeal entities. It's the most literal interpretation of "inner space exploration," treating out-of-body experiences and lucid dreams as fieldwork. The methodology is inherently subjective and anecdotal, making it the ultimate frontier science where the primary instrument is the explorer's own mind.
Example: "She published a field guide in Astral Sciences: 'Common Cognitive Parasites of the Lower Emotional Stratum and How to Shield Against Them.' Critics called it fantasy; practitioners called it the most important safety manual ever written for interdimensional backpacking."

The rigorous academic discipline dedicated to studying everything that happens when your "astral body" supposedly leaves your physical form to wander the cosmos. It's the field that attempts to map the astral plane, catalog its inhabitants (usually described as "beings of pure light" or "terrifying shadow monsters"), and develop a standardized taxonomy for out-of-body experiences. Unfortunately, peer review in astral sciences is tricky, as replicating the results requires the other scientist to also be asleep or deeply meditating at the exact same time.
Example: "He claimed his astral sciences research had proven the existence of the Akashic Records, a cosmic library of all knowledge. When asked for a source, he said he 'read it on the astral plane last Tuesday.' His paper was rejected."

The study of the societies, cultures, and power structures that supposedly exist on the astral plane. It seeks to understand the politics of ethereal beings, the economic system of an energy-based reality (do they trade in good vibes?), and the class structure among ascended masters, spirit guides, and that one guy who's just there to show you your past lives. It's a field filled with fascinating theories and a complete and total lack of verifiable data, making it a favorite among creative writing majors.
Example: "Her thesis in astral social sciences explored the hypothesis that the astral plane has a rigid social hierarchy, with 'beings of pure white light' at the top and 'confused, recently deceased people who don't know they're dead' at the bottom. She claimed she learned this from a talking orb named Bartholomew."

The specific analysis of group behavior among entities encountered during astral projection. Why do groups of astral beings always seem to be having a meeting you're not invited to? Why do they form silent, judgmental circles around you? And why is there always that one entity that just wants to show you a really complicated geometric shape for what feels like hours? Astral sociology suggests that the astral plane is basically just a cosmic waiting room, and everyone there is either ignoring you or trying to sell you a course on enlightenment.
Example: "During his first astral projection, he found himself in a vast, shimmering hall filled with silent, translucent figures. They all turned to look at him, nodded slowly, and then went back to whatever it was they were doing. It was a classic astral sociology moment: he was the new guy, and he was already being excluded from the astral inside jokes."
