"L'appel du vide" is when you have self-destructive thoughts for a split second - like swerving your car into oncoming traffic or imagining yourself jumping when you're standing at the edge of a cliff even though you'd never really do it. The phrase literally translates as "The call of the void"

Mississippi Appendectomy

An involuntary sterilization. During the heyday of the American eugenics movement (1920s and 1930s), poor black women were frequently given hysterectomies or tubal ligations against their will and without their knowledge. It was considered particularly frequent in the Deep South.

She went into the doctor for a cold and came out with a Mississippi appendectomy.

Ex Appeal

A pernicious mechanism that compels one to want one's ex more than one would if that ex were a complete stranger, platonic friend, or active love interest. While some may attempt to explain ex appeal in terms of nostalgia or fear of change, the phenomenon remains an anomaly, as it could not at any moment in the history of the human race have promoted survival and so should have been squandered by selective pressures hundreds of thousands of years ago.

The coolest place ever. A creative and performing arts camp where the theater freaks outnumber regular people by about 8 to 1, and so does the drama. It's actually kind of a cult.
