Then as adults they have a difficult time in their day to day life. Their spirit is usually broken and subservient. Someone that is emotionally troubled can easily be taken advantage of by unscrupulous individuals.
I think Jane is emotionally troubled, she reminds me of a puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of people.
