stonewall

v. To doggedly block someone's progress. Originally derived from the nickname a Confederate general "Stonewall" Jackson obtained at the battle of Bull Run (1st or second, i don't recall). The troops said his men were holding back the Union army like a stone wall. Hence Stonewall Jackson. So to stonewall means to delay and generally block someone.

When the kids from the Glee Club gave the guys from the football team a sound thrashing, it triggered a stonewall effect throughout the school, and nothing was ever the same again.

Stonewall Penalty

In football, where an unambigous foul is committed in the penalty area. The prefix 'Stonewall' is used to highlight the obvious nature of the incident; stonewall being a particular type of wall used throughout Scottish highlands and other mountainous regions as they are really obvious and nobody ever walks into them, ever. Except the occasional rambling referee.
"The referee has walked right into that one! He must have been swayed by the fans here at Old Trafford. The player has been hacked down at the waist by a flying scissor kick just outside the six yard box but the ball has not been touched. That was a stonewall penalty."

On june 28th 1969, a large gay community in greenwich village in New York reacted to a police raid by rioting.

In New York at the time, it was illegal to kiss or hold hands with other people of the same gender. Police would regularly go undercover to entrap gay men and raid bars that knowingly served liqiuor to three or more homosexuals.

Eight officers entered the Stonewall Inn(bar) and began making arrests. The riot started with a Transvestite threw a bear bottle and a lesbian made attempts to escape. Meeting with resistance, the police retreated back into the bar and sealed themselves in. At one point the police opened the door and dragged a heterosexual who was passing by into the bar and beat him severely. Eventually the crowd grew to 2000 and the riots stretched over about a week.

Stonewall Jackson

Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson (January 21, 1824 – May 10, 1863) was a Confederate general during the American Civil War, and probably the most revered Confederate commander after General Robert E. Lee. His military career includes such famous exploits as the audacious Valley Campaign of 1862 and as a corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee. Confederate pickets accidentally shot him at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863, which the general survived, albeit with the loss of an arm to amputation. However, he died of complications of pneumonia eight days later.
Jackson rose to prominence and earned his most famous nickname at the First Battle of Bull Run (also known as First Manassas) in July 1861. As the Confederate lines began to crumble under heavy Union assault, Jackson's brigade provided crucial reinforcements on Henry House Hill, demonstrating the discipline he instilled in his men. Brig. Gen. Barnard Elliott Bee, Jr., exhorted his own troops to re-form by shouting, "There is Jackson standing like a stone wall." That is how Jackson was named Stonewall Jackson
