oorah

A motivational cry used by the United States Marine Corps. Sometimes also used as a general response to an order or question. Recon Marines in Korea (1953), traveling by submarine, often heard the dive klaxon which sounded like "Aarrugah." These Marines began using the word as a motivational tool, but it was too long and slowly became modified into what it is today. It was popularized during the 80s and 90s.

"Get some!"
"Oorah!"

Oprah Effect

The almost viral phenomenon that occurs when Oprah endorses a cause or person or product. When Oprah announces her approval of something, its popularity will almost surely escalate to the point of frenzy.
First introduced by the cable news networks' 2008 Presidential election campaign coverage.

Woman # 1: "Did you hear that Oprah's backing Barack Obama for president in '08?"
Woman #2: "I'm voting for him. He's got the Oprah Effect."

Man # 1: "Now, how in the hell did Dr. Phil get his own show?"
Man # 2: "Must be the Oprah Effect, man."

Oprah Winfreyism

Most frequently seen on the Oprah Winfrey Show: quaint yet vapid and insipid New-Agey platitudes about life specifically designed to make you feel good about yourself so you 1) don't have to change anything and 2) don't have to ask yourself difficult questions that might make you think. They often assume the Bible is the answer to all life's problems. Replete with words like "inner self," "sharing," "healing," "New Earth healer," "Deepak Chopra," Doctor Phil" etc.

OprahBot 1.0: Did you see the latest episode of Oprah? She told me that I need to be a guru to my child and that the Bible holds all the answers!

Me: come on...those are just Oprah Winfreyisms and you know it...you're better than that.
