Gidge

A Royal Navy rating's hat. A term exclusively used by the pupils of the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, Suffolk, where they wear naval uniform for ceremonial purposes.

The origin of the word is unknown and seems to have come into use in the 1960s. It may be a corruption of 'gibby' an earlier word used by the school for the same attire.
