cite your sources

Share definition Flag
To ask someone how they know something to verify the accuracy. This makes fun of educational institutions that force you to always cite sources when you write a paper, but used in something much less formal.
Hey dude, I found out that she totally digs you.

How? Cite your sources!

Spite-Cite

Share definition Flag
To respond to someone doubting your claim by aggressively researching credible sources until your original point is supported by an absurd amount of evidence. The goal is no longer just to be right. The goal is to make them regret asking.

Unlike "trust me bro," a spite-cite is fueled by peer-reviewed literature, government reports, textbooks, and the burning desire to weaponize JSTOR.
Alex: "That doesn't sound right. Got a source?"

Sam: "You shouldn't have done that."

Three hours later...

Sam: "I found 47 sources, three meta-analyses, a doctoral dissertation, and an archived government report from 1986."

Alex: "...You spite-cited me."
