A term for autistic people!
The term “autizzy” has been around for decades and has been used among autistics & their families since the early 90’s in various suburbs within Minnesota, Colorado, & Illinois, if not in other states as well.
Between the years 2021-2022, the term has been in controversy after a Black Autistic by the name of “theythemplural” on the social media platform, TikTok, coined the term “autizzy” for only Black autistics after hearing it for the first time.
The term “autizzy” was certainly not created through the recent social media app, TikTok. The term was also not considered a part of AAVE (African American Vernacular English) until the last couple years, 2021-2022.
This coining by “theythemplural” of the term “autizzy” occurred during a time where being autistic became, for lack of a better phrase, trendy. Despite this, autism communities in various suburbs in America have been referring to themselves & loved ones as “autizzy” as well as making representative T-shirts with the term “autizzy” on them for years. The term is & has been for any autistic person to use since, at least, the 90’s.
