Phenomenon in which one stops listening to conversation for a short interval of time, only to find it has strayed wildly from the original topic

idle chatter: ...so then we were riding the bus and...

*stop listening for 15 seconds*

listener: fuckin Thompson effect, I have no idea what's going on.

From the Japanese Anime television show Trigun, which featured a woman of this description with the same name.

Thompson High School

Thompson High school is a school in alabaster alabama. Most of the white guys there dip and started dipping when they were in 8th grade. yeah and then they have all the pot heads and drinkers. In the guys restrooms all the ceiling tiles are removed so when the guys smoke in there the smoke goes in the ceiling so they wont get caught. Good old thompson smarties!

THompson is probably the cheapest school in the state. In the bathrooms most of the stall doors are missing or broke, the water faucets are missing and there is never any soap or paper towels. yea Thompson is a pretty crappy school!
