Purchased because having a crap larger car is supposedly better than having a well equipped but slightly smaller car. During the 1980s and 1990s major car brands actually produced special de-contented models for the Irish market, due to the very high taxes on cars and the poverty of the country at the time, but Paddy Spec is a 21st century phenomenon by people who should know, and can afford, better. The epitome of Paddy Spec is a base model Toyota Avensis diesel owned by a farmer.

Get the D-Spec Venniesmug. Spec (short for speculation in the sense of 'what if?' not that of specification) was the term most often used for a piece of fan fiction by the highly organised fanfic section of Anne Rice fandom. This community once loomed as large on the Internet as Goth, with its webpages, mailing lists, awards and hierarchically organised sects (such as the Coven of the Articulate) devoted to various characters in the Ricean oevre (especially the Vampire Chronicles). It was centered on the busy Usenet group alt.books.anne-rice (or ABAR).
The authors of these fanfictions would speculate on various aspects of their favourite Vampire Chronicles or Mayfair Witches characters; on their likely - or merely preferred - actions, motivations, pairings.
Their specs were increasingly gathered together in well kept spec archives all over the Net in those days. The Great SpecWriter Massacre of 2000 by Ms Rice's lawyers effectively put an end to this online fanfiction community.

Get the Specmug. Short for "Poverty specification". Originates from car culture, referring to cars that had many desirable options from the factory, but the purchaser chose the most basic possible model.
"Povo spec" is used to refer to anything that is cheap, and where paying just a little bit more would give a much better product. Can also be used simply to refer to something or someone that is bland and has no interesting attributes.
