Punk Rock

"Punk is musical freedom. It's saying, doing and playing what you want. In Webster's terms, 'nirvana' means freedom from pain, suffering and the external world, and that's pretty close to my definition of Punk Rock."
-Kurt Cobain
Punk Rock is not only just a music but an expression in and of itself.

Goth rock

Goth rock is a sub-genre of post punk music which originated in the UK in the late 70s (specifically 1979).

The first goth song is said to be "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus because even though the song was supposed to be written tongue-in-cheek, the band performed it with naive seriousness and the audience understood it with seriousness.

Goth rock characteristics include a 4 / 4 post punk beat, a drum machine, baritone vocals (common in men, like Peter Murphy of Bauhaus and Andrew Eldritch of The Sisters of Mercy), flanging guitar used for atmosphere and a prominent bassline. Some goth bands use characteristics of tribal music in their work, too (see: Southern Death Cult and Stairs - Uncertain Journey by Christian Death).

Contrary to belief, goth has not "evolved" and throughout the decades, the sound has relatively stayed the same. However, other dark or spooky genres and bands have cropped up throughout those decades which commonly get called "goth". This is false as goth only specifically refers to bands within that genre, not any band that uses a "dark" image or "spooky" lyrical themes.

Bands like Marilyn Manson and EBM bands like God Module are commonly mistaken for "Goth" when they're part of different genres.

The sound for all three of these groups are completely different, therefore could not be considered to be part of the same genre.
It is common for a goth to listen to goth rock, darkwave, deathrock and post punk but they can enjoy genres like metal (symphonic and Gothic in particular), industrial, EBM and synth pop too, just as long as they realise that the latter list are not goth genres.

tampon rock

A term coined in the late 1980's to refer to the (ahem) "sudden wave" of female folk musicians, including: Tracy Chapman, Michelle Shocked, Suzanne Vega, Toni Childs, Melissa Etheridge, The Indigo Girls, 10,000 Maniacs and others. Tampon Rock chicks were the spiritual mothers of both the Riot Grrrls and the Lilith Fair fems in the 1990s. Nowadays, the term has been re-"cycled" to refer to any folk-rock chicks who remind us of that original wave (mostly just Tegan & Sara).
Listening to Tampon Rock brings back such great memories from college days.

Gothic Rock

Music With A Dark Atmosphere and Morbid Lyrics. Was first use to describe bands like The Doors, The Velvet Underground, Leonard Cohen and The German Singer Nico in the late Sixties. why'll they were labeled gothic they werent goth they were more Proto-Goth and leventated more towards blues then modern goth rock which is more punk orientated. Modern Gothic Rock was born in the late seventies when punk bands like Joy Division, The Cure, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Bauhaus, Birthday Party and The Damned Experimenting With The Dark Atmosphere and Morbid Lyrics The Doors and The Velvet Underground Did a Decade Before, But Added a More Post Punk and New Wave Sound to It rather then The Psychedelic, Avant Garde and Blues Rock The Doors and The Velvet Underground Where Famous For. Goth Music like Acid Rock, Heavy Metal and Punk Created its own Subculture in the late Seventies and Early Eighties when Fans Of the Music starting dressing in all Black, Using Heavy Amounts of Makeup, Dyeing there Hair Black, Fans Of Victorian Era literature and had a weird obsession with B-Grade Horror Films.
Thoughtout the Eighties, Bands like The Banshees, The Cult, Sisters of Mercy, Southern Death Cult Brought Gothic Rock into the Mainstream. In The 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony The Cure Became The First Goth Rock Band To Be Inducted into the Hall of Fame. Lets Hope Joy Division, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and The Damned Joined them soon.
