An anti-war book written by Dalton Trumbo sometime in the 1940s and also a movie made in the 70s. Joe Donham is a young man who is drafted into a war based on democracy. He survives the explosion of a mine which ultimately leaves Joe lifeless; he is blind, deaf, and without limbs. His caretakers and doctors do not think he is capable of feeling pain, dreaming, or thinking, all which he goes through. These are some of his thoughts:
"I don't know whether I am alive and dreaming or dead and remembering."
"How can you tell what's a dream and what's real if you can't even tell when you're awake and when you're asleep?"
-Joe Donham,
Johnny Got His Gun

Get the fugitive in his own kingdommug. Expression used of someone who has met a sad end in fact or fiction. After a line from Hannibal Lecter in Thomas Harris's "The Silence of the Lambs", on the subject of Benjamin Raspail. Lecter had Raspail over for dinner and later commented, "Best thing for him, really. His therapy was going nowhere."
He jumped off a cliff and blew himself up with a bellyful of dynamite halfway down. Best thing for him, really. His therapy was going nowhere.
