It's a fashion movement, and it's the most imperialistic one you could ever imagine. Poor areas with rich culture are steamrolled over, as a homogenous wave of liberal arts students try on, commodify, and sell its remnants. Everything is a fashion than can be taken on or thrown out, and every part of culture is there to be declawed then commodified for this very same group.

Get the Hipstermug. Someone who is in the state of being "basic", or is classified as such, yet longs to be a "hipster." Like Pinocchio longed to be a real boy, these Pinocchio-Hipsters long to be real hipsters. Yet no matter how hard they try, how hard they grunge, or how tight their jeans are... they are doomed to be "basic," forever.
Cate longed to become hipster, but she was basic to the core. Like a giraffe in a duck costume, this Pinocchio Hipster wasn't fooling anyone.
